How Long It Took to Build These Famous Landmarks

Did you know that the Eiffel Tower is over 1,000 feet tall, and that it took more than two years to complete? There are many famous landmarks throughout the world, including the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower, and the Taj Mahal. While these landmarks are well known, the stories of how they came to be are less so. In particular, many people may be shocked to learn just how long some of these landmarks took to construct. The Great Wall of China is an iconic ancient defensive structure that stretches across northern China. Construction of the wall began around the 7th century BCE and continued for several centuries. The wall was built to protect China from invasions and raids. The construction process involved the use of various materials, including stone, brick, wood, and earth. The exact duration of construction is difficult to determine, as different sections were built at different times. However, it is estimated that the construction of the entire wall lasted for over 2,000 years, with continuous maintenance, repairs, and expansions by different dynasties.

The Eiffel Tower, an iconic symbol of Paris, France, was built as the entrance arch for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair). Construction began in 1887 and was completed in just over two years. The tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel, a renowned civil engineer. The construction process involved the use of over 18,000 individual iron pieces, which were prefabricated and assembled on-site. The tower’s height of 330 meters (1,083 feet) made it the tallest man-made structure at that time. The Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889, just in time for the World’s Fair and has since become one of the most visited landmarks in the world. Finally, The Taj Mahal is a magnificent mausoleum located in Agra, India. It was commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632 and was completed in 1653. The complex was built using white marble sourced from various regions of India and other precious stones. The construction process involved a large workforce of skilled craftsmen, artisans, and laborers. The intricate details of the building, including the marble inlays and calligraphy, required meticulous craftsmanship. The construction of the Taj Mahal took approximately 21 years to complete and is considered a masterpiece of Mughal architecture.
