One of the lesser-known facts is its connection to the Freemasons, a fraternal organization that George Washington was a member of. The cornerstone of the monument was laid in a Masonic ceremony, and the trowel used by Washington to lay the cornerstone of the Capitol was used in the ceremony. Another intriguing aspect is the different colored marbles used in its construction.
Due to a pause in construction during the Civil War and a lack of funds, the quarry that originally supplied the marble was abandoned. When construction resumed, marble from a different quarry was used, resulting in a visible color difference approximately 150 feet up. Moreover, there is a 12-foot-tall mini replica of the monument located nearby, which served as a line of sight for the builders during the monument’s construction. Another secret is the existence of an access hatch at the top of the monument, which leads to the interior of the pyramid.
This hatch was originally used by maintenance workers but is now closed to the public. Additionally, there is an original Washington Monument in Boonsboro, Maryland, which predates the one in D.C. and served as an inspiration for the more famous counterpart. Furthermore, while it is commonly believed that the monument is a solid structure, it is actually hollow inside, with an elevator and a staircase that leads to the top. These are just a few of the many fascinating secrets and lesser-known facts about the Washington Monument, making it not only a significant historical landmark but also a subject of intrigue and curiosity.
