The Amalfi Coast is a long stretch of coastline along the southern edge of Italy that stands as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region due to it’s beautiful villages. There is much to do and see while spending time on the Amalfi Coast, and we’ll be taking a look at some of the best of those things in this video! From hiking the Path of the Gods to exploring the town of Sorrento, join ViewCation as we explore the best things to do on the Amalfi Coast in Italy.
Go Hiking on the Path of the Gods
With a name like the Path of the Gods, one might think that this beautiful hike is only for tourists that are in touch with their inner Olympiad. However, the Path of the Gods isn’t all that long, or all that challenging. The four-mile-long hike gets it’s name not from the godlike nature of the challenge it presents to tourists, but instead from the religious experience that can be granted to visitors from it’s incredible views!
The Path of the Gods offers some of the most spectacular views of the Amalfi Coast that you’re going to find while visiting the region. The trail goes between the towns of Nocelle and Bomerano, and it’s trek will take visitors far above the village of Positano. The trail is actually accessible from the village of Positano, but accessing the trail from the village will require tourists to trek up nearly 800 steep steps. While the hike itself isn’t that big of a deal, going up or down these steps even once might be enough to do you in! Guided tours are offered, or you can simply take the hike yourself.
Find Out Where the Amalfi Coast Got It’s Name
There are numerous notable towns and villages along the Amalfi Coast, and the coast’s namesake town of Amalfi is surprisingly one of the smallest and least populated. However, that doesn’t mean that the town isn’t a ton of fun for tourists to visit! The reason that the coast is named after Amalfi is because this little town used to be bustling! However, a devastating earthquake ceased the town’s industry, and it remains a shell of it’s former self today.
While Amalfi may not be a town of bustling industry, it’s got a lot to offer visitors. The historic town is home to such beautiful building as the Amalfi Cathedral, the interesting architecture of which tourists won’t want to miss. The town of Amalfi is also one of the best places along the Amalfi Coast to find unique souvenirs that you won’t find anywhere else.
Go to the Commune of Ravallo
Ravallo is a commune perched upon a mountaintop along the Amalfi Coast, and it’s quite the quant little location! The commune is home to numerous gardens, shops, and eateries, and the romantic scenery offers a decided reprieve from the busy nature of some of the coast’s crowded towns. The commune is home to some historic landmarks, including Villa Rufolo. The villa functions as the main draw for most tourists visiting the town, and it’s certainly exquisite! Villa Rufolo isn’t the only historic landmark in Ravallo, with another notable landmark located within the commune being the Ravallo Cathedral, offering even more beautiful sights.
Check Out the Emerald Grotto
There is a small town along the Amalfi Coast by the name of Conca dei Marini, and this little town is famous for an attraction by the name of the Emerald Grotto. The Emerald Grotto is a sea cave that lights up a phenomenal emerald green whenever the sun shines through it. You can take a tour of the sea cave to get the full experience.
Visit the Island of Capri
When celebrities are visiting the Amalfi Coast, they typically head straight to the island of Capri. While most visitors to the region likely won’t be able to afford one of the massive celebrity yachts lining the island’s coast, there’s still plenty about the island that the average tourist will be able to appreciate. The easiest way to get to Capri is by a boat from the village of Positano. One of the most stunning sights to see while visiting the island of Capri is the Blue Grotto, which acts as a sort of complimentary attraction to the aforementioned Emerald Grotto. While the Emerald Grotto shines green in the sun, the Blue Grotto shines blue.

Visit One of the Amalfi Coast’s Beautiful Beaches
Of course, given the area’s name, it stands to reason that the Amalfi Coast is going to feature a beach or two. Thankfully, the beaches featured along the Amalfi Coast are something to behold! One of the more popular beaches along the coast is Marina Grande Beach, which functions as the go-to beach for those residing in the village of Positano. The shore of the beach spans nearly 1000 feet, and you can rent a chair from the nearby beach club and sit all day!
Another notable beach located along the Amalfi Coast is Furore Beach, which is possibly even more beautiful than Marina Grande Beach! However, the beach is a little more off the beaten path than Marina Grande Beach, which is located conveniently within the village of Positano. Furore Beach is located within the town of Furore. Once in the town, you’ll have to descend nearly 1000 steps to get the beach. However, there are also boats that will take you to Furore Beach from various locations along the Amalfi Coast.
Tourists looking to visit Furore Beach should keep in mind two things. Those things are that there’s minimal parking in the town of Furore, and that the beach only gets direct sunlight for a few hours of the day. While visiting Furore Beach may be a bit more challenging than visiting Marina Grande Beach, the experience can be worth it!
Check Out the Village of Positano
We’ve already mentioned the village of Positano several times in this video, and that’s because the village functions as a sort of cultural hub for the Amalfi Coast! While the village of Positano may not be quite as big as the town of Sorrento, the sights that it offers are much more unique and beautiful. Positano has the reputation of being the most beautiful village along the Amalfi Coast, and we agree!
Positano sits along a cliff of the Amalfi Coast, and the village is filled with picturesque pastel buildings that are sure to please the palette of visiting tourists. Of course, there are plenty of places to shop and eat, and there’s also plenty else to do within the village. There’s the aforementioned Marina Grande Beach, as well as Arienzo Beach. Finally, there are also the steep steps leading up to the Path of the Gods!
Hike the Valle Dei Mulini
The Valle dei Mulini, or the Valley of the Mills, is a valley located along the Amalfi Coast that offers some spectacular views for visitors. Hiking the valley is one of the best ways to experience the outdoors while visiting the coast, and there’s plenty to see along the way. There are numerous ruins, a broken-down paper mill, and even some waterfalls! You can begin the hike through the valley from the aforementioned town of Amalfi, and hiking all the way across the valley will take you to the town of Cetera. Between the two rests the town of Minori, which is certainly worth a visit if you have time during your hike! The town of Minori is a quiet and expectedly beautiful little harbor town, with one of it’s more notable attractions being the 11th century Basilica of Santa Trofimena, which is a historical Catholic church.
Experience the Ruins of Pompeii
The ruins of Pompeii are certainly something to behold, though you’ll likely have to face a fair amount of crowds while visiting them. The crowds can oftentimes be beat by booking a guided tour in advance, which some say is the best way to experience this vast archaeological site. The ruins of Pompeii are ancient, and you aren’t liable to find a much better portal to the past anywhere on the Amalfi Coast.
Take the Nature Reserve Walk at the Valle delle Ferriere
The aforementioned Valley of the Mills is far from being the only notable valley along the Amalfi Coast, with another notable valley bing the Valley of Ferriere, or Valle delle Ferriere. One of the best ways to experience this valley is by taking the guided three-hour-long Nature Reserve Walk. This walk will allow you to see all types of plants that you won’t find anywhere else, and some of them are carnivorous! There are also waterfalls and lemon trees along the walk.
Visit the Town of Sorrento
We already mentioned the town of Sorrento while talking about the village of Positano, as the two stand as the preeminent places to visit while exploring the Amalfi Coast. The town of Sorrento is the most popular town along the coast, and this means that it can get fairly busy. However, you’ll certainly want to see this bustling town at least once! Sorrento is a great place to experience some of the culture of the region. While visiting the town, you’ll want to be sure to try out some gelato and limoncello. Gelato is a light Italian ice cream, while limoncello is a lovely lemon liqueur.
